[REVIEW] LEGO Star Wars 7140 (SYSTEM) : X-Wing Fighter
Hi Lugsing Members,
This is my very first attempt to post my review. I've chosen Lego Star Wars set (LEGO 7140) because it is very unique and challenging due to the in-complete instruction available within the set. The instruction booklet only guide you how to build a X-wing Fighter and a Service Vehicle.
I decided to do reverse building technique and figure-out from a few blurred images and cartoon illustrations shown in the instruction (Book 4125023) to complete 7 alternative models. I hope you'll find this review useful if you manage to own this wonderful Lego Star Wars set.
This review will show you 9 different models build-out of Lego 7140 bricks + 4 minifigs (Luke Skywalker, Biggs Darklighter, R2-D2 and an Engineer). Have fun reading my review!
Set: LEGO SYSTEM 7140
Theme: Star Wars (Licensed) - X-Wing Fighter
Year Released: 1999
Instruction: 1 Book (4125023) + 1 Promotional Set Flyer (4124578-IN)
Minifigs: 4
Pieces: 266 (Googled Source)
RRP:US$30 (Googled Source)
The Instruction Booklet has a very interesting story-line (mentioned in Blue) and I've decided the review this beautiful set following the cartoon illustrated scenes shown in the booklet:
Box Images:
The box-art was very well presented, featuring other machine models you can possibly build.
Bags Images:
Not numbered but the assortments were easy to manage and took me 35mins to complete the booklet instructions.
Minifigs Images (The Cast):
Nolgastic looking minifigs.
X-Wing Fighter Images (Preparing for a Mission):
This is the hero model out of the box. I like the colour scheme and overall scale. Could have implement more details.
X-Wing Fighter in Action (X-Wing malfunctioned and crashed landed):
Mini Shuttle in Action (Luke decided to build a Mini Shuttle):
This my 2nd best chosen model. It look a little closed to a Snow Speeder
Luke Calling for HELP (Mini Shuttle was attacked by a sea creature):
A life-size mobile phone.
Escape Shuttle in Action & Luke's Lightsaber (Luke managed to deploy his Escape Shuttle and later scare-off the sea creature with his Lightsaber):
Escape shuttle and a life-size Lightsaber
Land Machine in Action (To the Rescue):
This is the most fragile model and need to handle with care.
The Transformation and a Survival Boat (Luke decided to build a Big Shuttle with his teammates):
The Big Shuttle (The story ends here and they flew back home):
This model is huge in terms of length. Able to squeeze 3 minifigs without closing the window canopy.
Parts list not found in the Instruction Book (Please note that my sortings are not official from LEGO):
Mini Shuttle:
Escape Shuttle:
Mobile Phone:
Lightsaber:
Land Machine:
Survival Boat:
Big Shuttle:
Here's a demo video on all 9 models:
The Ratings:
Value: 5/10 - I've paid a higher price for this set, otherwise 8/10.
Design: 8/10 - I love X-Wing Red 5 in Grey. Certain parts of the bricks-joints are weak but, if you know where to hold them, you shouldn't be breaking-up the build easily.
Minifigs: 7/10 - Not bad looking (miss-print on Luke's helmet & R2-D2 Head)
Parts: 8/10 - Could be better, but we're always looking for moc and upgrades.
Playability: 10/10 - If you can get a Lego Set that build 9 models, why not give it another point!
Overall: 8/10 - This is a fantastic LEGO set (Definitely worth getting if I knew it in 1999)
Personal Summary:
I started collecting LEGO Star Wars only recently (2013) and I'm getting a little out-of-hand with some crazy investments this year. LEGO 7140 has started my little Star Wars empire and I'm already fascinated by the very 1st box-set for it's design & quality. It didn't took me long to complete the build with the given instruction but I've spent many hours to figure-out and built the rest of the 7 models with 95% visually closed to the given diagram from the instruction booklet. I believed this lovely grey coloured X-Wing Red 5 will aged nicer than the other white coloured X-Wings (eg. 4502, 6212 & 9493) and there're rooms for improvements by adding more details and implementing retractable landing gear with reference to the newer X-Wing sets. I hope I'm not too late to join into the bandwagon and I wish the force be with you...

what i loved about the old sets, they have the maintainence crew and machineries!
if you buy a few sets, probably will have a pit crew also.

Nice review! Compared to white, I think I still prefer a grey x-wing.

Thanks benico! We should give older models a chance to revive, especially for new fans who are starting late.benico wrote:Looking good, a very thorough review... picture wise... and as they say pictures speaks a thousand words...

Re: [REVIEW] LEGO Star Wars 7140 (SYSTEM) : X-Wing Fighter
After my submission for this review, I've decided to do a mod for the X-wing. Here's a teaser image before I complete the task & create a new post with more images & details:
